Stuff in the Bible: Questions...

Q: Who is Jesus - REALLY? To me, to him, before he died, after he died, today...?
Q: Why do some people become Christians and not others, if God loves us all equally?
Q: Acts 2:17-20 (look up: www.biblegatway.com) We always talk about verses 17-18 and say they are for today, but what about 19-20?
Q: In Romans, Paul talks about Jesus dying and then says a person might die for a 'good man' but a person wouldn't die for a 'righteous man'. If you're a 'righteous man' surely you have to be 'good' as well? Can you be righteous without being good?
Q: Between Jesus dying and being resurrected, what did his spirit do/go?

Ok, guess i will give some of these a go...

Q3: Acts 2:17-20 - what about 19 & 20?
I think it is likely that these two verses utilise apocolyptic imagery traditionally used by the prophets to prophesy about times of social and political revolution it is probably also used in a socio-political sense here (for other examples see isaiah 13.10 - quoted by Matthew [24.29], isaiah 34.4 ezekiel 32.7, amos 8.9, luke 21.25-26). Though i am too lazy to think about the particular application in more detail. Verses 17 and 18 were occurring then (Peter is explaining what is happening then at pentecost) but the effects still apply now. I don't think the same can be said of most of verse 19 and verse 20. Furthermore, I think the context (for example 'this is' in verse 16) seems to imply that the major fulfillment was happening then. Peter alters the last bit of the quotation from Joel, probably to reflect the circumstance (compare it with Joel 2:31 - dreadful/glorious) of Pentecost, the outpouring of the Spirit, etc.

Q4: Being righteous is about doing what is right so I do not think he is contrasting 'righteous' and 'good'. As 'righteous' is an ethical word i do not think you can be righteous without being good. Controversial?
